EMV
EMV, which stands for Europay, Mastercard and Visa®, is a global standard for payment cards using embedded microchips. People’s Visa® Platinum credit cards have an embedded microchip that allows you to pay at merchants where chip cards are accepted. EMV also provides improved security and protection against fraud.
In addition to the embedded microchip, People’s Visa® Platinum credit cards also have a magnetic stripe on the back. That way you can continue to make purchases by swiping your card and signing a receipt or using your PIN.

What is a chip-enhanced credit card?
Chip-enhanced, sometimes called “chip cards” or “smart cards,” have a microchip embedded in the card. The chip is encrypted and provides stronger security and protection against fraud.
What kind of information is stored on the chip?
The microchip embedded in the card stores information required to authenticate, authorize and process transactions. No personal information about your account is stored on the chip card.
What makes EMV cards more secure?
EMV cards store payment information in a secure chip rather than on a magnetic stripe. Unlike a magnetic stripe card, it is nearly impossible for thieves to create counterfeit EMV chip cards. That’s because these chips encrypt data differently for each transaction (dynamic authentication).
Will my card work outside the United States?

Do I need to notify you when I travel?

Are there any additional fees associated with the EMV cards?
No additional fees apply to EMV credit cards.
How do I make a transaction with my new card?
Merchants in the United States are beginning to accommodate EMV cards by using a chip-enhanced terminals. If the merchant is not able to accept EMV cards, you will make purchases by swiping your card and signing a receipt.
To make a transaction, just follow these easy steps:
- Rather than swiping your card, insert the chip portion of the card into the terminal with the chip facing up and leave the card in the terminal until the transaction is complete. If you remove the card too soon, the transaction will end and your purchase will not be processed.
- Follow the prompts on the terminal’s screen.
- When your transaction is complete, the terminal screen will prompt you to remove your card.
For restaurant transactions, the terminal may be brought to your table to complete the transaction.
