Low-Cost Safe Deposit Boxes
Renting a safe deposit box is a good idea that many people put off doing. Now's the time to sign up for one. Once that stamp collection, heirloom jewelry or family photo is lost or stolen, it's too late.
A few suggestions: Don't put anything in your safe deposit box that you may need when the credit union is closed. Health care power of attorney papers are a good example. Videotape the contents of your home or business and then place the videotape in your safe deposit box. Jointly rent your box with someone who also can have access. Merely giving that person the key isn't enough. Another option: Appoint someone as an agent or power of attorney to have access to your box.
Remember: The contents in your safe deposit box are safe but, unlike your accounts, they're not insured.
